Vedic vs Western astrology: what is the real difference?

Published · Last checked

Both systems look at the same Sun, Moon and planets in the same sky. The main difference is where they start counting the zodiac. Western astrology starts at the March equinox. Vedic astrology starts from a fixed point among the stars. Today the gap between the two is about 24.2 degrees, and it grows by about one degree every 72 years.

Tropical and sidereal zodiacs

The Western, or tropical, zodiac is tied to the seasons. 0 degrees Aries is always the point where the Sun crosses the equator in March. The Vedic, or sidereal, zodiac is tied to the stars.

The two drift apart because Earth's axis slowly wobbles, a motion called precession. It moves the equinox point backwards against the stars by about 50 seconds of arc a year. The distance between the two zodiacs is called the ayanamsa. We use the Lahiri ayanamsa, the standard set by the Indian government's calendar reform committee in 1955.

Why your sign may change

Because the sidereal zodiac sits about 24.2 degrees back, any planet in the first 24 or so degrees of a Western sign falls in the previous sign in Vedic astrology. For most people that moves the Sun sign back by one. For example, the Sun is in Western Aries from about 20 March but enters Vedic Aries (Mesha) around 14 April.

Neither sign is wrong. They are two measuring systems, a bit like Celsius and Fahrenheit.

What each system focuses on

Western astrology puts the Sun sign first, uses Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, and pays close attention to the angles between planets, called aspects. Vedic astrology puts the Moon sign and the rising sign (lagna) first, uses the 27 nakshatras, divisional charts such as the navamsa, and dashas, which are planetary periods that run through your life.

Which is more accurate?

Both systems compute the same real planet positions, so neither is more accurate astronomically. Scientific tests have not shown that either system predicts personality or events. We offer both for reflection and fun, and we show exactly which zodiac each reading uses.

Frequently asked questions

Is Vedic astrology more accurate than Western astrology?

Neither has been shown to predict events in scientific tests. They use the same planets but different zodiacs, so the difference is a convention, not a measurement error. Many people enjoy reading both.

Why is my Vedic sign different from my Western sign?

The Vedic zodiac is fixed to the stars and is about 24.2 degrees behind the Western one today, so most planets shift back by one sign unless they sit late in a sign.

What is the ayanamsa?

The ayanamsa is the angle between the Western (tropical) and Vedic (sidereal) zodiacs. With the Lahiri method it is about 24.2 degrees today and grows by roughly 50 seconds of arc each year.

Does Vedic astrology use the Sun sign?

It does, but the Moon sign (rashi) and the rising sign (lagna) matter more. Daily Vedic readings are usually given by Moon sign, which is how our Vedic tab works.
