What your free birth chart shows

A birth chart (natal chart, or kundli in Indian astrology) is a map of the sky at the moment and place you were born. This tool gives you both the Western and the Vedic view of that same sky.

  • Your big three: Sun, Moon and rising sign, in the Western and Vedic zodiacs.
  • Western natal wheel with Placidus houses, the Ascendant and Midheaven, and the main aspects.
  • Vedic rashi chart (D1) in both North Indian and South Indian styles, with whole sign houses.
  • Planets table: sign, degree, house, nakshatra and pada, and retrograde planets.
  • Bhava chalit chart next to the rashi chart, showing the planets that move house.
  • Divisional charts D1 to D60: all 16 Parashari vargas, including the D9 navamsa chart and the D10, with a selector.
  • Vimshottari dasha tree: mahadasha, antardasha and pratyantardasha with start and end dates, the current period marked.
  • KP chart: KP ayanamsa, Placidus cusps and the star lord, sub lord and sub-sub lord of every planet and cusp.

How the chart is calculated

We wrote our own astronomy code from published methods: JPL planetary elements with corrections, the ELP-2000/82 Moon series from Jean Meeus's Astronomical Algorithms, nutation, delta T and the Lahiri ayanamsa. Birth times are turned into UTC with your browser's own time zone database, which includes daylight saving and historical changes. Read how to read your birth chart next.

Accuracy check (3 test charts, checked 2026-10-25): our Sun, Moon and planet positions agree with NASA JPL Horizons to within 0.6 minutes of arc.

Navamsa (D9) and the other divisional charts

A divisional chart cuts every sign into equal parts and gives each part a sign of its own. The D9 navamsa chart splits each sign into nine parts of 3°20′ and is read for partnership, dharma and the inner strength of the planets. The D10 is read for career. Open the Divisional tab and pick any of the 16 charts. Our guide to divisional charts explains the rule behind each one.

Bhava chalit: why planets can change house

The rashi chart uses whole sign houses: the rising sign is the 1st house, whatever degree it rises at. The bhava chalit chart instead treats the exact rising degree as the middle of the 1st house. We use the Sripati method that is usual in India: the arcs between the four angles are split into three, those points are the house middles, and each house begins halfway between two middles. You can also switch to Placidus cusps as house middles. A planet near the start or end of a sign can then fall in the next or previous house.

KP astrology chart: star lord, sub lord and sub-sub lord

Krishnamurti Paddhati (KP), devised by K. S. Krishnamurti, uses its own KP ayanamsa (about 6 minutes of arc less than Lahiri) and Placidus house cusps. Each nakshatra of 13°20′ is split into nine unequal subs in the proportions of the Vimshottari dasha years, starting with the nakshatra's own lord, and each sub is split again the same way. That gives every planet and cusp a star lord, a sub lord and a sub-sub lord. KP astrologers give the cusp sub lord the final word on a house.

Your Vimshottari dasha tree

The Dasha tab lists all nine mahadashas of the 120-year cycle from your birth. Open one to see its nine antardashas, and open an antardasha to see its pratyantardashas, each with start and end dates. The period running today is marked. For a page about this alone, use our Vimshottari dasha calculator.

Frequently asked questions

Is this birth chart calculator really free?

Yes. There is no sign-up and no paid report. The chart, rashi chart, nakshatra and dasha are all shown on this page.

Is my birth data stored or sent anywhere?

No. The maths runs in your browser. Your name, date and time of birth never leave this page. Only the place name you type may be looked up with Open-Meteo's free place search if it is not in our built-in city list. If you use Ask your chart, only your question and your chart facts (signs, houses, nakshatra and dasha) are sent to write the answer, and nothing is kept.

How do I find my rising sign and Moon sign?

Enter your birth date, exact time and place. The results show your Sun, Moon and rising sign (Ascendant) at the top, in both the Western and the Vedic zodiac.

Which house system and ayanamsa do you use?

The Western wheel uses Placidus houses and the tropical zodiac. The Vedic charts use whole sign houses, the sidereal zodiac and the Lahiri ayanamsa, with the mean lunar node for Rahu and Ketu.

How accurate are the planet positions?

We test our own code against NASA JPL Horizons. For the Sun, Moon and planets the difference is under one minute of arc, far smaller than the width of a zodiac degree.

What if I do not know my birth time?

Tick 'I don't know my birth time'. The tool uses 12:00 noon, and the rising sign, houses and exact dasha dates will not be reliable. Planet signs are usually still right, but the Moon can change sign during the day.

What is a navamsa chart (D9 chart)?

The navamsa or D9 chart divides each sign into nine parts of 3 degrees 20 minutes and places every planet in a new sign. It is the most used divisional chart in Vedic astrology and is read for partnership, dharma and planetary strength. Open the Divisional tab to see yours.

What is the bhava chalit chart?

Bhava chalit is a house chart in which the exact rising degree is the middle of the 1st house, and the other house middles are found by the Sripati method. A planet close to a sign edge can move into the next or previous house compared with the rashi chart. Our tool lists every planet that moves.

What are the sub lord and star lord in KP astrology?

In KP astrology the star lord is the ruler of the nakshatra a planet or cusp is in. Each nakshatra is split into nine subs in Vimshottari proportions; the ruler of that slice is the sub lord, and the next split gives the sub-sub lord. Our KP table shows all three for each planet and Placidus cusp.

Which divisional charts does the tool show?

All 16 Parashari vargas: D1, D2, D3, D4, D7, D9, D10, D12, D16, D20, D24, D27, D30, D40, D45 and D60, in North or South Indian style, with a short line on what each is traditionally used for.
